Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Review

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is entering it's biggest developmental phase this year.  With four movies in a twelve-month span, the road to Avengers: Infinity War is becoming shorter and shorter every day.  It has already been revealed that this film will be the last solo film before the Guardians of the Galaxy appear alongside the Avengers in the grand finale Marvel has been building for the past ten years. The first Guardians of the Galaxy was one of the best superhero movies in years, and perhaps the best movie so far in the Marvel cinematic universe.  Could writer/director James Gunn possibly top his original film?  In some ways, yes.  In other ways, no.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has many questions to answer that the first one left unanswered.  For example, who is Peter Quill's father?  What ever happened to Nebula?  Did the Guardians go out and help save the universe?  Or did they go back to being the band of thieves and mercenaries they were before?  For God's sake, what became of Howard the Duck?!?!? This movie answers many of these questions and then some.  This film really focuses on the psychology and background of each individual member of the Guardians.  As a psych major, I really enjoy the intense analyses of each individual character.  However, as an action movie fan, I find it slowed the pace of the film ever so slightly.  You can tell that this Guardians movie is very much owned by Disney, as it uses some of the same plot tools Disney has used in its last three or four animated features.  I found this incredibly frustrating.  The jokes in the first film came so effortlessly, and in this film, they were still good.  That being said, they had to work a hell of a lot harder to execute these jokes.

Not everything was bad however in this film.  I think that it still was an above average, enjoyable, and fun film.  The cameos are not as distracting as I thought they would be, and end up adding so much to film.  This movie really sells the values of a family much better than another big blockbuster movie that also happens to star Vin Diesel. The visuals were once again great, .which at this point is expected of MCU movies  Even an average movie written by James Gunn has better writing than most movies.  Be sure and stick around after the credits for five post-credits sequences you don;t Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is nowhere close to a perfect film.  It is just another solid entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Score: (7/10)
