In case some of you hadn't heard, a student who was pledging the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity at Towson University was hospitalized due to initiation related activities. After consuming and drinking, "cat food and a liquid he was told was vinegar and pickle juice", the young man began to throw up blood and was rushed to the hospital, where they have been investigating possible damage to his internal organs. Towson continues to investigate the incident.
For me this is a deafening blow to Greek life at Towson University. All of you know that I am not part of any kind of student group that supports hazing, and frankly I am sick of the pitfalls of Greek life. Tradition and brotherhood are valued over things such as the safety of individuals. How could I have a so called "brother", when they force me to do actions that put my own well being in jeopardy? The sad thing is this isn't the first time something of this sort has happened as a result of the actions of Greek life at Towson. What's even scarier is that anything that happens at Towson University is on such a smaller scale compared to larger University where the timeless tradition of hazing is taken far more seriously. Take for example the blatant racism of SAE in Oklahoma or even the Florida A&M Marching Band killing one of their own students. These groups claim that they are trying to improve the betterment of their respective campuses, and many of them do. However these kind of cultish behaviors are so outdated and unfitting for 2016, and must come to an end. My hope is that we increase conversations on what fraternities and sororities should accomplish for the betterment of their schools, rather than continuing to bring down the reputation of their institution.
